Metropolis Script: A Handwritten Font for Makers and Small Shop Designers

The first time I opened Metropolis Script on my computer, I was sitting at my kitchen table with a stack of blank candle labels, a cup of tea, and that familiar feeling of wanting something that felt both personal and polished. I had been searching for a handwritten font that didn’t feel too stiff or too messy—something that could sit quietly on a product label or stand out on a greeting card without shouting. Metropolis Script landed in my font library, and within an hour I had redesigned an entire product line.

This font is a modern handwritten typeface with an authentic, approachable feel. It carries that lovely unevenness you get from real handwriting, but it is refined enough to use on packaging, wall art, and boutique tags. The swashes are what really caught my attention. They curve and loop naturally, giving words a graceful finish that feels like a signature. For anyone who makes physical products or digital downloads, Metropolis Script offers a warmth that standard calligraphy fonts often lack.

The Visual Personality of Metropolis Script

Metropolis Script sits somewhere between playful and elegant. It is not the kind of script that tries to be overly formal or dramatic. Instead, it reads like something written by hand with care—maybe a note on a gift tag or a name on a wedding invitation. The letterforms are rounded and friendly, but the swashes add a touch of flourish that keeps it from feeling too casual.

When I tested it on a mockup for a small birthday invitation, I noticed how the letters connected naturally. There is no awkward spacing or forced ligatures. The font flows in a way that makes short phrases and single words look especially good. Names, product titles, and short messages all benefit from that smooth, handwritten motion. For longer text, it works best when used sparingly—perhaps a line or two on a card or a brief note on a label. That is the sweet spot for this typeface.

Candle Labels and Product Branding

I run a small shop that sells hand-poured candles, and the labels have always been a challenge. I want them to feel handmade without looking homemade in the wrong way. Metropolis Script solved that problem almost immediately. I used it for the scent names on my labels—things like "Vanilla Bean," "Lavender Honey," and "Wood Smoke." The font gave each name a soft, organic look that matched the natural ingredients I use.

When printed on matte sticker paper, the swashes caught the light just enough to look like subtle ink details. The letters stayed readable even at small sizes, which was a concern I had. I paired Metropolis Script with a clean sans serif font for the ingredient list and burn time information. That combination kept the label balanced—the script drew the eye first, and the sans serif handled the practical details without competing for attention.

For product tags, I used Metropolis Script for the shop name and let the swashes extend slightly beyond the tag edge. On kraft paper tags, the font reads as warm and rustic. On white or cream tags, it feels more modern and refined. The same font can shift its personality depending on the material, which makes it incredibly versatile for a small shop that sells across categories.

Wedding Invitations and Stationery

One of the most natural uses for Metropolis Script is wedding stationery. The swashes are perfect for names, dates, and short phrases like "Together with their families" or "You are invited." I designed a sample invitation suite for a friend who was planning a backyard wedding, and the font handled both the formal details and the casual tone of the event.

I used it for the couple's names at the top of the invitation, set at a larger size so the swashes could stretch across the card. For the body text, I switched to a simple serif font that didn't compete with the script. The result felt both personal and intentional. The swashes added a decorative element without needing extra embellishments or borders. That saved time and kept the design clean.

Metropolis Script also works beautifully on envelopes. I tested it with a Cricut pen to address a few sample envelopes, and the font traced cleanly without skipping or distorting. The swashes added a hand-lettered look that made each envelope feel like a small piece of art. For calligraphers who want to save time or for sellers who offer printed envelope addressing, this font is a reliable shortcut to a custom look.

Printable Wall Art and Digital Downloads

Printable wall art is a category where font choice can make or break a design. Customers want something that looks good printed at home, framed, and hung on a wall. Metropolis Script works well for quotes, single words, and minimalist designs. I created a set of prints with the word "Breathe" and a small floral accent, and the font gave the print a calming, modern feel.

The swashes become a design element themselves. On a large print, they add movement and flow. On a smaller print, they act as subtle decoration. I also tested the font on a design that said "This is our happy place" with a small leaf illustration, and the script carried the emotional tone of the phrase naturally. For sellers who create quote prints, affirmation cards, or personalized wall art, Metropolis Script offers a handwritten look that feels current without being trendy in a way that will date quickly.

Stickers, Planner Pages, and Small Goods

Stickers are another category where Metropolis Script shines. I make a small line of planner stickers with motivational words like "Focus," "Grateful," and "Today." The font works at the small scale required for sticker sheets because the letterforms are open and the swashes don't crowd the edges. When cut with a Silhouette or Cricut, the font holds its shape well. I did a few test cuts on vinyl and on paper sticker sheets, and the results were consistent across both materials.

For tote bags and T-shirts, I used Metropolis Script to create simple text-only designs. A tote bag with the word "Gather" in the font, set at a large size, looked like hand-painted lettering. The swashes added enough visual interest that the design didn't need any other graphics. On shirts, I kept the text small and placed it at the chest or on the back collar for a subtle branding effect.

When designing for cutting machines, I recommend testing the font at your target size before cutting a full batch. The swashes are detailed, and some ultra-thin connections might need a slight size adjustment to cut cleanly. But overall, Metropolis Script behaves well for physical production, and the results feel professional without losing the handmade charm.

Packaging and Boutique Tags

For sellers who package their products with tags, tissue paper, or boxes, Metropolis Script adds a layer of perceived value. I used it on small hang tags for a line of bath salts, with the product name in the script and a tiny ingredient list in a sans serif font below. The tags looked like they came from a boutique, not a kitchen table operation.

The font also works for shop signage, thank you cards, and packaging inserts. A simple thank you card with "Thank you for your order" in Metropolis Script, printed on recycled card stock, feels like a personal note. Customers notice those details. It builds a consistent brand identity across every touchpoint, from the product label to the packing slip.

Pairing Metropolis Script with Other Fonts

Metropolis Script pairs well with clean sans serif fonts like Montserrat, Lato, or Open Sans. The contrast between the script and a simple sans serif creates a clear hierarchy in your design. Use the script for the main message or brand name, and let the sans serif handle the supporting information. For a more formal or traditional look, pair it with a simple serif font like Garamond or Playfair Display. The script adds the warmth, and the serif adds the structure.

I avoid pairing it with another script or a heavily decorative font, because that tends to create visual clutter. One script is enough per design. Let Metropolis Script be the star, and keep everything else simple.

What to Check Before You Start Selling

Before you use Metropolis Script on physical products, templates, or digital downloads, take a moment to review the included styles, alternates, and ligatures. The font comes with a set of swashes that can be toggled on and off depending on your software. Some design programs handle OpenType features better than others, so test the swashes in your preferred application before committing to a large batch.

Check the file formats included with your purchase. Most font downloads include OTF and TTF files, and both work well for print and cut projects. If you plan to use the font with a cutting machine, the TTF format is usually the safer choice. Also verify whether the font supports multilingual characters if your product line includes languages beyond English.

Commercial licensing is another important step. If you plan to sell physical products, templates, printables, or merchandise that includes Metropolis Script, confirm that your license covers commercial use. Some fonts require an extended license for certain applications, especially if you are selling digital templates where the font is embedded or if you are producing large quantities of physical goods. The extra peace of mind is worth the small investment.

A Font That Grows With Your Shop

Metropolis Script has become one of those fonts I return to again and again. It works across product categories, from candles to cards to coasters. It feels authentic without being rough, and elegant without being stiff. For makers who want a handwritten font that can handle real production work, this is a strong choice.

Whether you are printing labels for a weekend market, designing a full wedding suite, or building a cohesive brand for your online shop, Metropolis Script brings a handcrafted feel that customers respond to. It is a font that makes your work look like it was made with care, because it was.
